The contamination of surface water and drinking water with nitrate is dangerous to human health and harmful to the environment. Nitrate Watch is a national community science program where volunteers can request free kits to track levels of nitrate in their local waterways and drinking water. By raising awareness and using real data, we can track nitrate pollution hotspots and advocate for solutions!

What do Nitrate Watch test strips measure?

The test strips included in each Nitrate Watch kit measure nitrate nitrogen, also written as nitrate-N or NO3-N. This is the same measurement used by water utilities when monitoring nitrate levels in drinking water. It is also the same measurement used by the US EPA in setting and enforcing the 10 mg/L regulatory standard for nitrate in drinking water.
